My father was sent to boarding school at the age of 8. He claimed it was the cause of all that went wrong with his life. I’m writing my memoir based on his life and how it affected me. I can’t speak for the other 5 siblings, well, I can but won’t include it my memoir. The title could easily be “Belonging”.
Thank you so much for sharing a part of your father’s story and how it has influenced your own life and writing. It sounds like a deeply meaningful and important journey, one that I’m sure will resonate with many.
I’ve also spent time reflecting on my own experiences, particularly those formative years spent away at school. About 8,000 words of my memoir are dedicated to that period, exploring the resilience it fostered in me as well as the lasting challenges, such as learning to trust others. I consciously chose to break the cycle when my children came along, striving to create an emotionally nurturing environment for them.
If you think it might be helpful, I’d be happy to share more details from my own journey. Your memoir is undoubtedly a worthwhile endeavour, and I very much look forward to reading it when it’s released.

To pause, and ask yourself ‘where do I truly feel I belong?’ is so eye opening and powerful. A very insightful piece. Thank you, Mark ☺️
